How solar installers bill

Residential solar is usually priced per watt of DC system capacity, then broken down into panels, inverters, racking, electrical work and permitting on the invoice.

Solar installers commonly use "Deposit at signing, payment on install, final on permission to operate". Solar contracts usually take a deposit at signing and split the rest between installation day and the utility's permission to operate.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Solar Photovoltaic Installers $24.93 (employees, not contractor rates). The sample's $75.00 per hour for "Installation labor, roof and electrical" is 3.0 times that employee figure; a business rate also has to cover insurance, tools, travel, unbilled admin time and profit.

Solar Installer invoicing tips

  • Print the system size in kW DC, the module and inverter models and their quantities on the invoice; utilities, rebate programs and future buyers of the house all ask for exactly that equipment list.
  • Tie the last payment to the utility's permission to operate and write the PTO date when you invoice it, because customers resist paying in full for a system they are not yet allowed to switch on.
  • If a main panel upgrade or roof repair was needed before mounting, bill it as a separate line with its reason, since many rebates and incentives treat that work differently from the solar equipment itself.
  • Show any rebate or incentive you applied for on the customer's behalf as its own line, with whether it is already deducted or still pending, so the net price is never mistaken for a guarantee.

Solar Installer billing disputes to head off

  • Owners compare the first bills with the production estimate in the proposal. Noting on the invoice that the estimate was based on stated shading, tilt and weather assumptions keeps a cloudy first month from becoming a dispute.
  • Roof leaks at mounts are blamed on the installer for years; recording the flashing method and the roof's condition before install protects you when a later leak has another cause.

Work a solar installer can bill for

Core tasks of Solar Photovoltaic Installers (O*NET 47-2231.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Assemble solar modules, panels, or support structures, as specified.
  • Install photovoltaic (PV) systems in accordance with codes and standards, using drawings, schematics, and instructions.
  • Perform routine photovoltaic (PV) system maintenance on modules, arrays, batteries, power conditioning equipment, safety systems, structural systems, weather sealing, or balance of systems equipment.
  • Activate photovoltaic (PV) systems to verify system functionality and conformity to performance expectations.
  • Apply weather sealing to array, building, or support mechanisms.
  • Check electrical installation for proper wiring, polarity, grounding, or integrity of terminations.
