How carpenters bill
Usually bills finish and repair work by the hour or the day, with trim, doors and hardware passed through at cost plus a handling markup.
Carpenters commonly use "Due on completion", so the invoice is payable the day it is issued. Many carpenters ask for the material cost up front when they buy trim or doors before the job starts.
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Carpenters $28.51 (employees, not contractor rates). The sample's $72.00 per hour for "Finish carpentry labor, living room trim" is 2.5 times that employee figure; a business rate also has to cover insurance, tools, travel, unbilled admin time and profit.
Carpenter invoicing tips
- Bill trim in linear feet with the profile and width written out; a customer who later wants a matching run in the hallway will use your invoice as the shopping list.
- Be open about waste: buying 10-15% extra molding for miter and cope cuts is normal, and saying so on the invoice heads off questions about why the order exceeds the room's measurements.
- If you return unused doors or trim for credit, note who receives that credit, because customers who paid for the material generally expect the refund to come back to them.
- Log time by task when repairs and new installs are mixed on one visit, since an old house can turn a one-hour door adjustment into three and you will need to show why.
Carpenter billing disputes to head off
- Painting is often assumed to be part of trim work. Stating that the molding was installed primed, filled and caulked, ready for paint, avoids a dispute at the walkthrough.
- Time spent picking up material at the supply yard is another sore point; a short separate line for it is more honest than hiding it inside labor hours.

- Study specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
