How yoga instructors bill

Bills studios per class taught, private students per session and companies per class series, with workshops and retreats priced as separate events.

Yoga instructors commonly use "Net 30 for corporate clients; private sessions paid at booking", so payment is due 30 days after the invoice date. Corporate series and retreats are commonly secured with a deposit of a quarter to a half of the fee; private sessions are prepaid.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Exercise Trainers and Group Fitness Instructors $22.20 (employees, not contractor rates).

Yoga Instructor invoicing tips

  • When you teach at a studio as a contractor, invoice the studio for each class with its date, time slot and headcount if your pay depends on attendance, so per-student bonuses can be checked against the studio's sign-in sheet.
  • Wellness budgets at larger companies usually run through procurement, so put the purchase order number and the name of the person who booked the series on the invoice or it can stall in accounts payable.
  • Price mat and prop hire separately from teaching, because some offices already own mats and will ask to drop that line rather than negotiate down your class rate.
  • For a class series, list every date taught; if the company cancels a class at short notice, the dated list shows which classes remain billable under your terms.

Yoga Instructor billing disputes to head off

  • Studios that pay per student sometimes report lower attendance than you counted. Recording the headcount for each class on your invoice gives both sides a figure to reconcile.
  • Retreat and workshop deposits are argued over when a participant drops out; stating on the invoice the date after which the deposit is non-refundable avoids the discussion.

Work a yoga instructor can bill for

Core tasks of Exercise Trainers and Group Fitness Instructors (O*NET 39-9031.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations governing sports, recreational activities, and the use of exercise equipment.
  • Offer alternatives during classes to accommodate different levels of fitness.
  • Plan routines, choose appropriate music, and choose different movements for each set of muscles, depending on participants' capabilities and limitations.
  • Observe participants and inform them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement.
  • Teach proper breathing techniques used during physical exertion.
  • Instruct participants in maintaining exertion levels to maximize benefits from exercise routines.
