How nutritionists bill

Usually sells a multi-week program or a block of follow-up consultations, with the first assessment priced higher than follow-ups and meal plans charged as written deliverables.

Nutritionists commonly use "Program fee due before the first session, or in three monthly installments". Programs are usually paid up front or split into monthly installments, with the first payment taken when the client books.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Dietitians and Nutritionists $35.50 (employees, not contractor rates).

Nutritionist invoicing tips

  • Separate counseling time from written deliverables such as meal plans and recipe packs; plans that cover medical nutrition therapy pay for the consultations, not for the documents.
  • When a client's insurance covers medical nutrition therapy, the claim normally uses 97802 for the initial assessment and 97803 for follow-ups, both counted in 15-minute units, so record minutes, not just a session count.
  • Print the program dates and how many follow-ups the fee includes, so a client who drops out halfway can see which consultations were delivered and what the rest was worth.
  • If you resell supplements or meal-replacement shakes, put them on separate lines from the counseling, because product sales and professional advice are often taxed differently.

Nutritionist billing disputes to head off

  • Clients sometimes expect the meal plan to be rewritten every week for the program fee. Stating how many plan revisions are included, right on the invoice line, heads off that argument.
  • Many states protect the title 'dietitian' through licensing, so the credential in your invoice header should be exactly the one you hold; a mismatch spotted by an insurer is an easy reason to refuse a claim.

Work a nutritionist can bill for

Core tasks of Dietitians and Nutritionists (O*NET 29-1031.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Assess nutritional needs, diet restrictions, and current health plans to develop and implement dietary-care plans and provide nutritional counseling.
  • Consult with physicians and health care personnel to determine nutritional needs and diet restrictions of patient or client.
  • Advise patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans, diet modifications, and food selection and preparation.
  • Counsel individuals and groups on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life.
