How septic service businesses bill

Pumping is priced per tank up to a base volume, with extra gallons, digging to the lids, filter service and the treatment plant's disposal fee added as separate charges.

Septic service businesses commonly use "Due on receipt", so the invoice is payable the day it is issued.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Septic Tank Servicers and Sewer Pipe Cleaners $23.62 (employees, not contractor rates).

Septic Service invoicing tips

  • Record the gallons actually pumped and the sludge and scum depths you measured, because a county health office or a buyer's lender may ask for those figures and the next pumper will want them too.
  • Note where the lids are, measured from a fixed point such as a house corner, so the customer is not charged again for probing and digging at the next pump-out.
  • Put the receiving facility's per-gallon disposal fee on its own line at cost; customers read it as a pass-through rather than your markup, and it can follow the facility's rate changes.
  • Write a suggested pump-out interval based on the tank volume and the household size you were told, which turns the invoice into the reminder that brings the customer back.

Septic Service billing disputes to head off

  • A backup a few days after pumping often leads to a refund request. Noting the condition of the baffles, any signs at the drain field and any tee you could not reach shows the pump-out was done and the fault lies elsewhere.
  • Digging charges cause arguments when lids are deeper than expected; quoting a per-lid price with a depth limit and writing the actual depth on the invoice keeps it clear.

Work a septic service can bill for

Core tasks of Septic Tank Servicers and Sewer Pipe Cleaners (O*NET 47-4071.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Drive trucks to transport crews, materials, and equipment.
  • Communicate with supervisors and other workers, using equipment such as wireless phones, pagers, or radio telephones.
  • Prepare and keep records of actions taken, including maintenance and repair work.
  • Operate sewer cleaning equipment, including power rodders, high-velocity water jets, sewer flushers, bucket machines, wayne balls, and vac-alls.
  • Measure excavation sites, using plumbers' snakes, tapelines, or lengths of cutting heads within sewers, and mark areas for digging.
  • Locate problems, using specially designed equipment, and mark where digging must occur to reach damaged tanks or pipes.
