How nail technicians bill

Prices each set or service from a menu, with nail art and chrome charged per nail, extra length as an add-on and removal of another salon's product billed separately.

Nail technicians commonly use "Due at the end of the appointment". Many independent nail techs take a small booking deposit, credited to the service total, especially for long art sets.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Manicurists and Pedicurists $16.66 (employees, not contractor rates).

Nail Technician invoicing tips

  • Charge nail art and chrome per nail with the count on the line, rather than a vague 'design' fee, because clients count their own nails at the register.
  • Bill removal of another salon's product separately from soaking off your own sets, and say so on the menu, since it is the line clients most often ask to have waived.
  • Write your free-fix period, for example a lifted or broken nail repaired free within 5 days, on the receipt so a client who comes back on day 9 knows the repair is billable.
  • For fills, note the weeks since the last set on the ticket, since an overgrown fill takes nearly as long as a new set and many salons price fills higher after three weeks.

Nail Technician billing disputes to head off

  • A client who picks a simple design from a photo and adds extras in the chair is likely to dispute the final price; itemizing each add-on and confirming it before you start avoids the argument.
  • Card chargebacks claiming a set lifted or broke are hard to answer without records; a receipt listing the set type, the date and the fix policy gives you the evidence.

Work a nail technician can bill for

Core tasks of Manicurists and Pedicurists (O*NET 39-5092.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Clean and sanitize tools and work environment.
  • Schedule client appointments and accept payments.
  • Remove previously applied nail polish, using liquid remover and swabs.
  • Shape and smooth ends of nails, using scissors, files, or emery boards.
  • Apply undercoat and clear or colored polish onto nails with brush.
  • Advise clients on nail care and use of products and colors.
