How barbers bill

Charges a flat price per cut or shave, with beard work, hot towels and line-ups listed as add-ons and memberships billed monthly.

Barbers commonly use "Paid at the chair". Not usual for walk-ins; shops that take online bookings sometimes keep a card on file to cover no-shows.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Barbers $18.73 (employees, not contractor rates).

Barber invoicing tips

  • Name the cut on the ticket (skin fade, taper, scissor cut) instead of just 'haircut', because fades and detail work cost more and customers expect to see what justified the price.
  • If you sell a monthly membership with a set number of cuts, invoice the membership monthly and issue a zero-priced receipt for each visit, so members can see visits used against what they pay.
  • Price house calls and event bookings such as weddings with a travel line and a minimum number of cuts, because one cut at a venue costs you the same travel time as ten.
  • Print kids' and senior prices as their own menu items with the age rule, rather than as a discount off the adult cut, so a busy front desk applies them the same way every time.

Barber billing disputes to head off

  • Walk-ins who change the order mid-cut (adding a beard, switching to a fade) dispute the total at the register; calling out each add-on price before you start and itemizing it on the receipt keeps it transparent.
  • Members who cancel often claim they never used their cuts; a dated visit log on the monthly membership invoice settles it.

Work a barber can bill for

Core tasks of Barbers (O*NET 39-5011.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Clean and sterilize scissors, combs, clippers, and other instruments.
  • Cut and trim hair according to clients' instructions or current hairstyles, using clippers, combs, hand-held blow driers, and scissors.
  • Drape and pin protective cloths around customers' shoulders.
  • Question patrons regarding desired services and haircut styles.
  • Clean work stations and sweep floors.
  • Record services provided on cashiers' tickets or receive payment from customers.
