Babysitter invoicing tips
- Write the actual start and end time of every sit, not just the hours, because parents who returned at 11:20 rather than 11 pm will check whether you rounded up.
- Price additional children as their own hourly line, so families with one child visiting a sibling's friend can see exactly what the extra child added that night.
- Parents claiming US dependent care benefits or the child care credit may need the provider's name, address and taxpayer ID, so ask before the year ends whether they want that information on your receipts.
- Put the late-night rate on a separate line starting at the time it applies, rather than charging the whole evening at the higher rate.
Babysitter billing disputes to head off
- Arguments over rounding after a late return are common; stating your rounding rule, such as to the next quarter hour, on the invoice settles them before they start.
- A cancellation an hour before a booked Saturday leaves you without pay; if you charge a minimum for late cancels, write the cutoff on each receipt so it is part of the agreed terms.
