How tailors bill
Prices alterations per garment and per operation (hem, take in, sleeves), and quotes made-to-measure pieces per garment including fittings and cloth.
Tailors commonly use "Paid at pickup". Made-to-measure and bridal work commonly takes half up front, while everyday alterations are paid when the garment is collected.
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Tailors, Dressmakers, and Custom Sewers $19.64 (employees, not contractor rates).
Tailor invoicing tips
- Write the measurement change next to each operation, such as 'sleeves shortened 3/4 in', so the customer collecting the suit weeks later, or the next tailor, can see exactly what was done.
- Price shortening sleeves on a jacket with working buttonholes as a separate, dearer operation, because the work has to come from the shoulder and customers rarely understand why it costs more than a hem.
- Print the event date and the promised pickup date on the ticket and charge rush as its own line, since wedding and prom alterations tend to arrive in the same crowded fortnight.
- State on the claim ticket how long you hold finished garments, because unclaimed alterations pile up in small shops and the ticket is the only place the customer will see the policy.
Tailor billing disputes to head off
- A customer whose weight changes between fitting and pickup may say the fit is wrong. Recording the fitting date and the customer's sign-off on the pinned measurements keeps the discussion about the body, not the stitching.
- Letting out older or delicate fabric can leave visible needle lines or a faded fold; a note on the ticket that marks may show stops a refund demand after the seam is opened.
Work a tailor can bill for
Core tasks of Tailors, Dressmakers, and Custom Sewers (O*NET 51-6052.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.
- Fit and study garments on customers to determine required alterations.
- Sew garments, using needles and thread or sewing machines.
- Measure parts, such as sleeves or pant legs, and mark or pin-fold alteration lines.
- Take up or let down hems to shorten or lengthen garment parts, such as sleeves.
- Let out or take in seams in suits and other garments to improve fit.
- Assemble garment parts and join parts with basting stitches, using needles and thread or sewing machines.
