NZ invoicing rules

  • Since 1 April 2023 New Zealand requires "taxable supply information" rather than a fixed tax invoice document, so the words "Tax invoice" are no longer compulsory, although many businesses still use them.
  • The information required steps up at NZ$200 and NZ$1,000, with buyer details only needed above NZ$1,000.
  • A GST-registered buyer can ask for taxable supply information, and the seller must provide it within 28 days of the request.
  • Corrections to an earlier supply are made with supply correction information, which replaces the old credit and debit note rules.
  • Keep GST records, including taxable supply information, for at least seven years.

E-invoicing, simplified invoices and record keeping

For supplies of NZ$200 or less only the seller name, date, description and amount are required.

Keep issued and received invoices for at least 7 years in New Zealand.
