Mexico invoicing rules
- A valid factura is an electronic CFDI 4.0 XML file stamped by a certified provider (PAC); a PDF is only its printed representation.
- IVA is 16% in most of the country, with an 8% stimulus rate for qualifying businesses in the northern and southern border regions, and 0% on most food and medicines.
- When an individual invoices a company for professional services, the company usually withholds two-thirds of the IVA and 10% income tax, and the CFDI shows these withholdings.
- Invoices paid in instalments or later use payment method PPD and require a separate payment receipt CFDI (complemento de pago) when payment arrives.
- Keep CFDI files and accounting records for five years.
E-invoicing, simplified invoices and record keeping
Electronic invoicing through CFDI has been mandatory for all taxpayers since 2014, and version 4.0 has been the only valid version since 1 April 2023.
Keep issued and received invoices for at least 5 years in Mexico.
